The Production Sub-Authorization Process (PPAP) is a standardized type of documentation, primarily used by the automotive industry. PPAP is part of the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) process and documents a series of agreements between automotive component manufacturers and large automotive companies that depend on the development and supply of components in a timely manner. A small company in the automotive components market must feel comfortable with PPAP procedures in order to compete with larger suppliers. PPAP`s main objective is to improve the automotive component supply chain for both suppliers and the large automotive companies that make up their customers. PPAP agreements signed by both the supplier and the customer provide written proof that the supplier understands the requirements and specifications required by the customer and that the supplier can provide the desired number of components within a specified time and price. The introduction of PPAP has helped to improve the quality of components delivered through the automotive component supply chain. PPAP was originally developed by the Automotive Industry Action Group, an organization dedicated to streamlining the automotive component supply chain. The first incarnation of PPAP was used in the automotive industry in 1993 and was developed in collaboration with Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. The fourth edition of PPAP, the last published, was developed by AIAG in March 2006 and replaced the third edition in June of the same year. Although PPAP is primarily related to the automotive industry, similar agreements have been reached between suppliers and buyers from other sectors.
